In response to your quandary about whether babies dream:
Dreaming is associated with REM sleep. We know this because when adults are awakened during REM, they report that they were dreaming. Adults spend approximately 20% of their sleep time in REM sleep. Infants spend 50% of sleep time in REM sleep. Elderly people spend less than 15% of sleep time in REM. Therefore, infants most likely dream quite a bit. However, we have no way of really knowing since they cannot report their dreams to us.
